Job Opening: Islamic Studies Teacher

Role Context

SOLA School is an Afghan-led private boarding school for girls. From 2016-2021 the school operated as the first and only of its kind in Afghanistan; since 2021, it has operated in Rwanda. SOLA's mission is to provide Afghan girls a rigorous education that promotes critical thinking, a sense of purpose, and respect for self and others. Our intent is to provide Afghan girls with an environment where they can focus on their education and potential.

SOLA provides a safe and nurturing space in which to learn. A residential faculty provides round-the-clock guidance and supervision, and our program creates opportunities for our students to explore personal interests and practice leadership skills among their peers. Numerous off-campus initiatives provide immersion in various cultures and nurture a global perspective in each of our students.

General Description of Position

Under general supervision of the principal, this position will teach Islamic Studies to students in grades 6 to 12 and support their academic, personal, and character development. The teacher will serve as an academic advisor to assigned students and contribute to other school programs and activities as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Has a passion for teaching Islamic Studies, both content and skills, to grades 6 to 12.

  • Design curriculum for instruction and assessment based on Afghan and international standards.

  • Develop lesson plans and appropriate instructional materials. Adapt curricula in Islamic subjects to meet the needs of students through individual, small-group, and whole-class instruction using a variety of student-centered teaching strategies.

  • Foster students’ understanding of Islamic values, ethics, responsibility, and character development.

  • Create a supportive and positive learning environment with high expectations that encourage student engagement, critical thinking, responsibility, and respect for others.

  • Institute and uphold high standards of student conduct essential to providing an orderly, honest, and productive environment.

  • Monitor, evaluate, and communicate each student’s progress and growth in knowledge and comprehension through regular assessments, feedback, and progress reports.

  • Provide academic guidance and support to assigned students and collaborate with colleagues to support student wellbeing and success.

  • Aid in the selection of instructional materials and be responsible for the inventory of classroom materials.

  • Participate regularly and actively in meetings with other teachers and managers to provide input to and feedback on curriculum implementation and student progress.

  • Participate cooperatively with the Principal on performance evaluations and professional development activities.

  • Serve as a dorm associate living in the residence hall or assume dorm coverage responsibilities.

  • Serve as a Weekend Person on Duty (POD) on a rotating basis with other residential staff.

  • Participate in student activities, clubs, athletics, outings, overnight field trips, and other extracurricular or school-wide activities as assigned.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Successful candidates need to possess the following abilities: effective pedagogy in student-centered approaches, strong ability to build rapport with and motivate students, organizational skills, communication skills, collegiality, humor, teamwork, and a commitment to supporting students' academic and personal growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree and/or other training preferred. Additional relevant training is preferred.

  • Fluency in Pashto and Dari required.

  • Arabic language proficiency preferred.

  • Strong spoken and written English required.

  • 2–3 years of experience working in middle and high schools; experience in a boarding school environment is a plus.

  • Technological proficiency.

  • Availability to work in Rwanda starting on August 1, 2026.

  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
