Job Opening: Controller

SOLA, a unique boarding school for girls located in Afghanistan, seeks a US-based Controller to be directly responsible for all financial functions and reporting. A member of the school’s senior administrative team, the Controller reports to the vice-president, and works closely with the president and senior administrative staff in both the US and Kabul.

SOLA is delivering educational and leadership opportunities for a new generation of Afghan girls so they may develop new solutions to Afghanistan’s challenges. SOLA will be an internationally accredited girls’ boarding school in Kabul with students in grades 6-12 from all Afghan provinces, major ethnic groups, sects, tribes and languages. General Expectations:

The Controller is the senior financial and administrative officer and a key member of the leadership team. This position reports to the vice-president with a strong collaborative relationship with the senior administrative staff. The Controller will be responsible for leading an internal team that manages finance, planning, accounting and budgeting.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work with the president on financial planning and modeling in support of campus expansion, construction projects, and enrollment growth.

  • Review, modify, and implement financial management policies, business processes and controls to ensure complete financial integrity.

  • Direct the development and management of an annual operating budget as well as oversight of cash management, financial controls and accounting operations such as Billing, A/R, A/P, and GL.

  • Maintain a robust system of controls over accounting transactions.

  • Report financial results to senior staff and to the board in an accurate and timely manner.

  • Assess liability issues and oversee risk management and mitigation.

  • Implement robust contracts management and reporting system.

  • Oversee banking relationships in the US and in Kabul to support operations.

  • Oversee human resource administration with respect to compensation and benefits policies.

  • Manage vendor relationships for audit, IT, insurance, payroll and accounting.

  • Train staff in the US and in Kabul on policies, procedures and the use of key tools such as QuickBooks.

  • Ensure quality control over financial transactions, grants and financial reporting.

  • Assist the Director of Communications in writing grant proposals.

  • Track and compile financial information needed for donor and grant reporting.

  • Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit.

  • Coordinate the preparation of regulatory reporting to comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.

  • Manage month-end and year-end close process.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the president or vice-president.

Salary Range:

Competitive based on experience and education

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • 4-8 years of progressive financial and operations management and business leadership experience.

  • Three or more years’ experience in finance/operations administration in an independent school or a non-profit organization strongly preferred, but candidates with for-profit experience may also be considered.

  • A team player with excellent judgement willing to embrace SOLA’s mission in the spirit of problem solving, delegation and congenial supervision.

  • Familiarity with financing, human resources, financial audits, and day-to-day business operations.

  • Solid analytical and problems solving skills with the ability to connect financial data with business decisions.

  • Attention to detail within larger strategic goals.

  • Fluency in financial management software.

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with Board committees.

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, changing environment.

  • Self-starter who is forthright with a deep sense of integrity.

  • Bachelor’s degree required, CPA and/or advanced degree strongly preferred.
