Job Opening: Islamic Studies Teacher

Recently re-located to Rwanda, SOLA School is an Afghan-led private boarding school for girls and was the first and only of its kind in Afghanistan. SOLA's mission is to provide Afghan girls a rigorous education that promotes critical thinking, a sense of purpose, and respect for self and others. Our intent is to provide Afghan girls with an environment where they can focus on their education and potential.

SOLA provides a safe and nurturing space in which to learn. A residential faculty provides round-the-clock guidance and supervision, and our program creates opportunities for our students to explore personal interests and practice leadership skills among their peers. Numerous off-campus initiatives provide immersion in various cultures and nurture a global perspective in each of our students.

General Description of Position

Under general supervision of the principal, this position will teach sections in the field of Islamic Studies to students in grades 6 to 12 and will aid in other school programs as assigned. This includes serving as an advisor to students and student clubs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

● Has a passion for teaching Islamic Studies, both content and skills, to grades 6 to 12.

● Design curriculum for instruction and assessment based on Afghan and international standards.

● Develops lesson plans and appropriate instructional materials. Adapts curricula in Islamic subjects to needs of students through individual and small group instruction through a variety of creative instructional activities.

● Institutes and upholds high standards of student conduct essential to providing an orderly, honest, and productive environment.

● Evaluates and communicates each student’s progress and growth in knowledge and comprehension through regular progress reports.

● Aids in the selection of instructional materials and is responsible for the inventory of classroom materials.

● Provides a supportive and positive learning environment with high expectations that encourage student responsibility, enhance motivation, clearly communicate classroom routines, and incorporate challenging and varied instructional strategies.

● Participates regularly and actively in meetings with other teachers and managers to provide input to and feedback on the implementation of the curriculum.

● Participates cooperatively with the principal on performance evaluations.

● Serves as a dorm associate living in the residence hall or assumes dorm coverage responsibilities.

● Serves as a Weekend Person on Duty (POD) on a rotating basis with other residential staff.

● Participates in student activities, including the possibility of athletics as well as outings and overnight field trips.

● Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Successful candidates need to possess the following abilities: effective pedagogy in student-centered approaches, strong ability to build rapport with and motivate students, organizational skills, communication skills, collegiality, humor, and teamwork.

Requirements

● Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree and/or other training preferred.

● Familiarity with Pashto and Dari helpful.

● 2-3 years of experience working in middle and high schools; experience in a boarding school environment is a plus.

● Technological proficiency.

● Availability to work in Rwanda starting in August 2024.

● Ability to pass a criminal background check.
